Oxidation resistance of Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 Al 0.8 Sn 0.2 C 2 MAX phases: A comparison

2019

Ti3AlC2 and Ti3Al0.8Sn0.2C2 MAX phase powders are densified using Spark Plasma Sintering technique to obtain dense bulk materials. Oxidation tests are then performed over the temperature range 800-1000°C under synthetic air on the two different materials in order to compare their oxidation resistance. It is demonstrated that, in the case of the Ti3Al0.8Sn0.2C2 solid solution, the oxide layers consist in TiO2, Al2O3 and SnO2. The presence of Sn atoms in

What has been thought and taught on the lunar influence on plants in agriculture? Perspective from physics and biology

2020

This paper reviews the beliefs which drive some agricultural sectors to consider the lunar influence as either a stress or a beneficial factor when it comes to organizing their tasks. To address the link between lunar phases and agriculture from a scientific perspective, we conducted a review of textbooks and monographs used to teach agronomy, botany, horticulture and plant physiology; we also consider the physics that address the e ects of the Moon on our planet. Finally, we review the scientific literature on plant development, specifically searching for any direct or indirect reference to the influence of the Moon on plant physiology. We found that there is no reliable, science-based evi…

Seabird migration strategies: Flight budgets, diel activity patterns and lunar influence

2021

Every year, billions of birds undertake extensive migrations between breeding and nonbreeding areas, facing challenges that require behavioural adjustments, particularly to flight timing and duration. Such adjustments in daily activity patterns and the influence of extrinsic factors (e.g., environmental conditions, moonlight) have received much more research attention in terrestrial than marine migrants. Taking advantage of the widespread deployment in recent decades of combined light-level geolocator-immersion loggers, we investigated diel organisation and influence of the moon on flight activities during the non-breeding season of 21 migrant seabird species from a wide taxonomic range (6 …

Synthesis and in vitro leishmanicidal activity of novel [1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine salts

2017

Leishmaniasis remains a significant worldwide problem; it is of great interest to develop new drugs to fight this disease. Recently we described some [1,2,3] triazolo[1,5-a] pyridine compounds with significant leishmanicidal activity. The importance of water solubility in drug action made us realise that we could transform non charged triazolopyridines into charged analogues that could increase the degree of water solubility. With this objective we report here the synthesis of novel [1,2,3] triazolo[1,5-a] pyridinium salts 2-7 from triazolopyridines 1, and the study of their in vitro leishmanicidal activity. The activity was tested on Leishmania infantum, Leishmania braziliensis and Leishma…

Influence of Centerline Intermetallic Stringers on Pitting Corrosion Resistance of Superduplex Stainless Steel

2021

Superduplex stainless steel UNS S32750 / EN 1.4410 is commonly used in marine environment, petrochemical, oil and gas, chemical and desalination industries, requiring materials with superior corrosion and mechanical properties. Very few residual intermetallic particles may be present under the form of centerline stringers whose effects on corrosion properties are not well documented. A previous study demonstrated the negligible influence of the intermetallic phases in centerline stringers (typically < 0.1% over thickness) on the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of superduplex stainless steel [1]. The present study aims at highlighting the impact of centerline intermetallic stringers on…

Monte Carlo simulations of the solid-liquid transition in hard spheres and colloid-polymer mixtures

2010

Monte Carlo simulations at constant pressure are performed to study coexistence and interfacial properties of the liquid-solid transition in hard spheres and in colloid-polymer mixtures. The latter system is described as a one-component Asakura-Oosawa (AO) model where the polymer's degrees of freedom are incorporated via an attractive part in the effective potential for the colloid-colloid interactions. For the considered AO model, the polymer reservoir packing fraction is eta_p^r=0.1 and the colloid-polymer size ratio is q=sigma_p/\sigma=0.15 (with sigma_p and sigma the diameter of polymers and colloids, respectively). Inhomogeneous solid-liquid systems are prepared by placing the solid fc…

Reversed phase liquid chromatography for the enantioseparation of local anaesthetics in polysaccharide-based stationary phases. Application to biodeg…

2020

[EN] A comprehensive study on the chiral separation of bupivacaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine and propanocaine with eight commercial polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) in reversed phase conditions compatible with MS detection is performed. Methanol and acetonitrile are used as organic modifiers. Retention and resolution values obtained for each compound in the different CSPs and mobile phases are compared. The polysaccharide-based CSPs tested present different enantioselectivity towards the analytes. From the results, the experimental conditions for determining the enantiomers of bupivacaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine and propanocaine in saline aqueous samples using MS detecti…

Sequential treatment of ADHD in mother and child (AIMAC study): importance of the treatment phases for intervention success in a randomized trial

2018

Abstract Background The efficacy of parent-child training (PCT) regarding child symptoms may be reduced if the mother has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The AIMAC study (ADHD in Mothers and Children) aimed to compensate for the deteriorating effect of parental psychopathology by treating the mother (Step 1) before the beginning of PCT (Step 2). This secondary analysis was particularly concerned with the additional effect of the Step 2 PCT on child symptoms after the Step 1 treatment. Methods The analysis included 143 mothers and children (aged 6–12 years) both diagnosed with ADHD. The study design was a two-stage, two-arm parallel group trial (Step 1 treatment group [TG]: …

Effects of plantar flexor muscle fatigue induced by electromyostimulation on postural coordination

2007

International audience; The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of a modification of an intrinsic capacity (plantar flexor strength) on the implementation of in-phase and anti-phase mode of coordination. Analysis of hip and ankle relative phases during fore-aft tracking task was done before and after an electromyostimulation fatigue protocol on the soleus muscles. Results showed participants used exclusively in-phase and anti-phase modes of coordination, with a sudden switch from one to the other with target frequency increase. Regarding tracking tasks, fatigue induces a decrease of performance for lower frequencies, and a significant decrease of switch frequency (−0.0…
